Top 10 reasons why people lose their jobs

1. Not being punctual
Being consistently late to arrive for work or being late back from breaks.  Turning up late for appointments or meetings – especially with customers or with the boss!

2. Sickness
Taking a ‘sickie’ when not actually sick!  Failure to provide doctors certificates for prolonged absence due to sickness.  Failing to inform an employer of an existing medical condition that could affect your ability to perform in your job.

3. Gross Misconduct
This can lead to immediate dismissal because it is serious enough and possibly criminal, e.g. stealing, drug and/or alcohol abuse, sexual harassment, manipulating or falsifying information / fraud, imprisonment, blatant abuse of company policy or company property.

4. Inappropriate Behaviour
Swearing, using unacceptable language.  Refusing to follow reasonable directions and orders. Dishonesty or lack of integrity whilst at work. Not taking your job seriously.  Taking advantage of designated break times e.g. going out for a cigarette every hour or taking lots of tea breaks.

5. Bullying
Bullying other people in the workplace or cyber-bullying.

6. Inappropriate use of social media
(e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) during work time.  Texting, making / taking personal calls or surfing the internet on non-work related websites.  Conducting personal business at work.

7. Poor performance
Not achieving reasonable or agreed targets, inconsistent or unreliable performance, inability to complete assigned job tasks, performing tasks slowly or with numerous errors.

8. Lack of Team Working
Inability to get along with work colleagues leading to a reduction in group or team productivity. Not getting along with people in the workplace.

9. Redundancy
Redundancy is a type of dismissal. Redundancies take place when there is no longer enough (or any) work for an employee at a company or when a company restructures the workforce and the job being done no longer exists or has been automated.

10. Lying on your CV (and/or in interview).
When it becomes apparent that you have deceived an employer in order to get the job – don’t expect to keep it!
